As the site was situated within a conservation and state heritage area, the preservation and reinforcement of the historical significance of the precinct was vital to provide a sense of identity and enhance the culture of the existing district. The team at lead architects re-interpreted an industrial precinct to suit a more contemporary demographic, with a continual embrace of the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings as a factor in creating sustainable communities and adding character to the area.
The pedestrian links were instrumental to the existing Prince Alfred Park, and provided a greater transient movement between the in-between spaces. By activating the edges between the site, the park and Central station, it enabled lead architecs to create greater uses of open spaces, create a stronger cultural hub and allowed improvements to accessibility.
